What Is the MOVE Method? A Doctor's Blueprint for Staying Active Without Surgery
What Is the MOVE Method? A Doctor's Blueprint for Staying Active Without Surgery

One of the most common things I hear from patients is, "Doc, I guess I'm just getting older."

My answer is usually the same:

Getting older is inevitable. Giving up on movement is not.

Over the years, I have seen too many people believe that joint pain automatically means surgery is around the corner. The truth is that many people can improve their pain, move better, and stay active by making changes in a few important areas of their health.

That is why I created the MOVE Method.

The MOVE Method is my blueprint for helping people stay active without surgery whenever possible. It focuses on four simple pillars that work together to improve your joints, muscles, and overall health.

M = Motion and Muscle

I often tell my patients that motion is lotion.

Your joints are like the hinges on your front door. If you never open and close that door, the hinges get stiff and rusty.

Your knees, hips, and shoulders work the same way.

Movement helps lubricate your joints and keeps them functioning properly.

Muscle is just as important.

Strong muscles act like shock absorbers for your joints. They help take pressure off painful knees and hips.

The stronger you become, the better your body can handle everyday activities.

O = Optimal Body Weight

Every extra pound we carry puts more stress on our joints, especially our knees.

Think about carrying a backpack filled with heavy books all day long. Eventually, your back and shoulders would start to ache.

Your joints feel the same way when they have to carry extra weight.

The good news is that even a small amount of weight loss can make a big difference in pain and mobility.

You do not need to lose 50 pounds overnight. Sometimes losing just 10 pounds can be a game changer.

V = Vital Nutrition

Food is fuel.

Your body needs the right nutrients to build muscle, reduce inflammation, and heal.

Protein, fruits, vegetables, fiber, and proper hydration all play an important role in keeping your body functioning well.

You cannot expect your body to run well if you are putting poor-quality fuel into the tank.

E = Energy and Recovery

Most people do not realize how important sleep and recovery are for joint health.

When you sleep, your body repairs itself.

When you are stressed, exhausted, and not recovering well, pain often feels worse.

Good sleep, stress management, and recovery habits can improve your energy and help your body heal.

The MOVE Method is not about quick fixes.

It is not about one injection, one exercise, or one magic supplement.

It is about creating healthy habits that work together to help you feel better and stay active for years to come.

My goal is simple:

Help you stay active without surgery whenever possible.

Over the next several weeks, we are going to take a deeper dive into each part of the MOVE Method and show you practical steps you can start using right away.

Because getting older does not mean you have to stop doing the things you love.

You were made to move.

And with the right plan, you can keep moving for a long time.
