If you’ve ever played in a multi-day tournament or back-to-back competition and woken up the next morning barely able to walk down the stairs, you know how brutal muscle soreness can be.
A new study published in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness suggests there may be a surprisingly effective solution, and it’s one we offer right here in Houston.
What Is Radial Shockwave Therapy?
Radial shockwave therapy (rSWT) uses pressure waves delivered through the skin to stimulate healing in muscles and soft tissue. It's used for conditions like plantar fasciitis or tendon pain. But researchers are now finding it may have a powerful role in helping athletes recover faster between games, not just heal injuries.
What the Research Found
Scientists at Northumbria University studied 61 male and female basketball players competing in an international tournament, giving half of them radial shockwave treatment within four hours after each game, targeting the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves. The other half received no treatment at all.
The results were striking.
By Day 4 of the tournament, players who received shockwave therapy reported 35% less muscle soreness than those who received no treatment, and they also felt significantly more recovered heading into their next game.
In plain terms: their legs felt better, and they felt more ready to compete again.
For anyone who plays in weekend tournaments, travel baseball or softball, or any sport with games in quick succession, that kind of recovery advantage is a big deal.
What It Won’t Do
It’s worth being upfront: the study found that shockwave therapy did not significantly reduce general fatigue or improve sleep quality. So it’s not a complete recovery cure.
Think of it as a targeted tool that takes the edge off localized muscle soreness and helps your body feel more prepared, rather than something that replaces good sleep, hydration, and nutrition.
We Have This Technology in Houston
The good news is that you don’t have to look far.
