Creatine After 40: Building Muscle to Protect Your Joints and Stay Active

When most people hear the word creatine, they think of bodybuilders or young athletes trying to get bigger.

I look at creatine differently.

For adults over 40, creatine can be another tool to help maintain muscle, support strength training, and stay active as we age.

That is why creatine monohydrate is part of the MOVE Method.

What Is Creatine?

Creatine is a substance your body naturally makes and stores mostly in your muscles. We also get small amounts from foods such as meat and fish.

Think of creatine like a backup battery for your muscles.

When you perform resistance training, climb stairs, lift something heavy, or get up from a chair, your muscles need energy. Creatine helps your muscles quickly produce some of that energy.

This can help you train more effectively, which matters because resistance training is what tells your body to build and maintain muscle.

Creatine doesn't replace exercise.

It helps support the work you're already doing.

Why Does Muscle Matter After 40?

As we discussed in the previous MOVE Method article, we gradually lose muscle as we age if we don't actively work to maintain it.

For someone with knee arthritis, losing muscle can become a major problem.

Your quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and other muscles act like the suspension system on your car. They help absorb forces before those forces reach your joints.

The stronger the suspension, the smoother the ride.

This is one reason building muscle is an important part of my Knee Preservation Program.

We aren't simply treating the painful knee.

We're trying to build a stronger body around it.

How I Use Creatine in the MOVE Method

For many appropriate adults, I recommend creatine monohydrate, the most extensively studied form of creatine.

A practical daily approach is generally 3 to 5 grams per day. Some people use higher amounts, but more isn't automatically better.

Consistency matters more than timing. You don't need an elaborate loading phase, and you don't need to take it at an exact time of day.

I want patients to remember this formula:

Resistance training + adequate protein + creatine + consistency = a better environment for maintaining muscle.

Creatine is a supplement. It isn't a shortcut.

Practical Takeaway: Make Muscle a Priority

This week, look at your own muscle-building plan.

Are you performing resistance training?

Are you getting enough protein?

Are you consistently giving your body the nutrients it needs to recover?

If appropriate for you, talk with your physician about whether creatine monohydrate belongs in that plan.

People with kidney disease or other significant medical conditions should discuss creatine with their personal physician before using it.

The goal isn't to become a bodybuilder.

The goal is to maintain enough muscle to walk, travel, exercise, play with your grandchildren, and continue doing the things you love.

Motion is lotion. Muscle is medicine.

And protecting your muscle after 40 is one of the best investments you can make in healthy aging, joint preservation, and staying active without surgery.
